Synopsis :
In
the cotton fields of Mississippi, in a sordid little town, Sparta, a
crime has just been committed: an industrialist about to set up a
factory is found murdered in the street. An unknown traveler sitting in
the station hall is arrested by a sheriff's deputy, he is immediately
accused of murder because he is black and has a lot of money on him.
After verifying his identity, it turns out that this man from
Philadelphia is Virgil Tibbs, a police officer from that city. He was
then released without a word of apology. His superior then orders him to
stay in Sparta and work with Sheriff Gillespie to find the murderer, a
request supported by the victim's widow who does not have confidence in
the local police.
Dans
le Mississippi des champs de coton, dans une petite bourgade sordide,
Sparta, un crime vient d'être commis : un industriel sur le point de
monter une usine est retrouvé assassiné dans la rue. Un voyageur inconnu
assis dans le hall de la gare est arrêté par l'adjoint du shérif, il

ville. Il est alors relâché sans un mot d'excuse. Son supérieur lui
ordonne alors de rester à Sparta et de collaborer avec le shérif
Gillespie pour retrouver le meurtrier, demande appuyée par la veuve de
la victime qui n'a pas confiance dans la police locale
