Synopsis :
A
mysterious, unnamed stranger rides out of the desert into the isolated
mining town of Lago in the American Old West. Three gunmen hired to
protect the town taunt and threaten him; he kills all three with little
effort. When the attractive, blonde townswoman Callie Travers
flirtatiously insults him, he rapes her in the livery stable. That
night, in his hotel room, the Stranger dreams of Jim Duncan, a U.S.
Marshal, being whipped to death by outlaws Stacey Bridges and brothers
Dan and Cole Carlin, as Lago's citizens watch in silence...
It
is the first Western film that he both directed and starred in. Under a
joint production between Malpaso and Universal, the original screenplay
was written by Ernest Tidyman, who had won a Best Screenplay Oscar for
The French Connection.
Synopsis :
Un
mystérieux inconnu sans nom sort du désert et se dirige vers la ville
minière isolée de Lago, dans le vieil ouest américain. Trois hommes

Callie Travers l'insulte de manière coquette, il la viole dans l'écurie.
Cette nuit-là, dans sa chambre d'hôtel, l'Étranger rêve de Jim Duncan,
un maréchal américain, fouetté à mort par les hors-la-loi Stacey Bridges
et les frères Dan et Cole Carlin, sous les yeux des citoyens de Lago en
silence...
Il
s'agit du premier western réalisé par Clint Eastwood dans lequel il
joue. Dans le cadre d'une coproduction entre Malpaso et Universal, le
scénario original a été écrit par Ernest Tidyman, qui avait remporté
l'Oscar du meilleur scénario pour The French Connection.
