Synopsis :

Richard Harland, writer, and Ellen Berent, beautiful and wealthy heiress, meet and fall in love. Very quickly Ellen pushes Richard to marry, but she gradually manifests a possessive and jealous character, unable to stand neither her infirm brother-in-law, nor her half-sister, nor her mother nor even the child she is carrying. How far will her unhealthy jealousy and her desire to have her husband all to herself take her?

In the decades following its release, Leave Her to Heaven garnered a cult following and has been the subject of film criticism for its unique blurring of genres, featuring elements of film noir, psychological thrillers, and melodramas. It has also been noted for its numerous visual and narrative references to figures in Greek mythology. The film's title is drawn from William Shakespeare's Hamlet, in which the Ghost urges Hamlet not to seek vengeance against Queen Gertrude, but rather to "leave her to heaven, and to those thorns that in her bosom lodge to prick and sting her."

In 2018, the film was selected for the United States of America National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.

Synopsis :

Richard Harland, écrivain, et Ellen Berent, belle et riche héritière, se rencontrent et tombent amoureux l'un de l'autre. Très vite Ellen pousse Richard au mariage, mais elle manifeste progressivement un caractère possessif et jaloux, ne supportant ni son beau-frère infirme, ni sa demi-sœur, ni sa mère ni même l'enfant qu'elle porte. Jusqu'où sa jalousie maladive et sa volonté d'avoir son mari pour elle seule l'amèneront-elle.. ?

Dans les décennies qui ont suivi sa sortie, Leave Her to Heaven a suscité un véritable culte et a fait l'objet de critiques cinématographiques pour son mélange unique de genres, avec des éléments de film noir, de thrillers psychologiques et de mélodrames. Le titre du film est tiré d'Hamlet de William Shakespeare, dans lequel le fantôme exhorte Hamlet à ne pas chercher à se venger de la reine Gertrude, mais plutôt à « la laisser au paradis et à ces épines qui se logent dans son sein pour la piquer et la piquer ».
