Synopsis :

On the boat linking Hong Kong to Macau, the capital of games and crime, Lawrence Trumble, an undercover police officer, Julie Benton, a cabaret singer and a former GI on the run, Nick Cochran, meet. They will meet at the Cabaret run by Vincent Halloran, the godfather of the local underworld, where Julie sings. Cochran decides to help Trumble stop Halloran, "a big shot", owner of many gambling establishments...

The Production

Macao was the second feature that Josef von Sternberg filmed to fulfill a two-picture contract with RKO Pictures then owned by Howard Hughes. Shooting began in September 1950 and was released in April 1952.

Sternberg's habit of handling actors "as mere details of décor" elicited strenuous objections from stars Jane Russell and Gloria Grahame such that "the shooting of Macao has become a minor legend." John Baxter reports that "fights on the set" were not uncommon, and were manifested in the "strained" performances of the cast.

Sur le bateau reliant Hong Kong à Macao, la capitale du jeu et du crime, Lawrence Trumble, un policier infiltré, Julie Benton, une chanteuse de cabaret et un ancien GI en fuite, Nick Cochran, se rencontrent. Ils se retrouveront au Cabaret tenu par Vincent Halloran, le parrain de la pègre locale, où Julie chante. Cochran décide d'aider Trumble à arrêter Halloran, "un gros bonnet", propriétaire de nombreux établissements de jeux...

La production 

Macao fut le deuxième long métrage tourné par Josef von Sternberg pour honorer un contrat de deux films avec RKO Pictures, alors détenue par Howard Hughes. Le tournage commença en septembre 1950 et le film sortit en avril 1952. 

L'habitude de Sternberg de traiter les acteurs « comme de simples détails de décor » suscita de vives objections de la part des stars Jane Russell et Gloria Grahame, de sorte que « le tournage de Macao est devenu une légende mineure ». John Baxter rapporte que les « bagarres sur le plateau » n'étaient pas rares et se manifestaient dans les performances « tendues » des acteurs.
