Synopsis :

Jeff Markham (Robert Mitchum) is a gas station attendant in a small town. He is approached by a man who turns out to be an old acquaintance of his. The man tells Jeff that Whit Sterling (Kirk Douglas), a former employer, has found his trail and intends to collect a debt Jeff owes him. Jeff agrees to see him again. Received by Whit Sterling who offers to erase his debt in exchange for a favor: to take back compromising documents for him. That evening, Jeff finds his girlfriend and reveals his past to her...

Out of the Past was produced by RKO Pictures, and the key personnel—director Jacques Tourneur, cinematographer Nicholas Musuraca, actors Mitchum and Greer, along with Albert S. D'Agostino's design group—were long-time RKO collaborators. Although the studio focused on making B-films during the early 1940s, the post-World War-II Out of the Past was given a comparatively lavish budget.

John Garfield and Dick Powell turned down the lead. Kirk Douglas, in only his third credited screen performance, plays a supporting role but a central part in the story as Mitchum's antagonist. The next time Mitchum and Douglas played major roles in the same picture it was 20 years later in the 1967 Western The Way West, alongside Richard Widmark.

Synopsis :

Jeff Markham(Robert Mitchum) est pompiste dans une petite ville. Il est abordé par un homme qui se révèle être une de ses anciennes connaissances. L'homme déclare à Jeff que Whit Sterling(Kirk Douglas), un ancien employeur, a retrouvé sa trace et entend bien se faire payer une dette que Jeff a envers lui. Jeff accepte de le revoir. Reçu par Whit Sterling qui lui propose d'effacer sa dette contre un service : reprendre des documents compromettants pour lui. Le soir venu, Jeff retrouve sa petite amie et lui révèle son passé...

Out of the Past a été produit par RKO Pictures, et le personnel clé – le réalisateur Jacques Tourneur, le directeur de la photographie Nicholas Musuraca, les acteurs Mitchum et Greer, ainsi que le groupe de conception d'Albert S. D'Agostino – étaient des collaborateurs de longue date de RKO. Bien que le studio se soit concentré sur la réalisation de films de série B au début des années 1940, Out of the Past, sorti après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, a reçu un budget relativement généreux.

John Garfield et Dick Powell ont refusé le rôle principal. Kirk Douglas, qui n'en est qu'à sa troisième apparition à l'écran, joue un rôle secondaire mais un rôle central dans l'histoire en tant qu'antagoniste de Mitchum. La prochaine fois que Mitchum et Douglas ont joué des rôles majeurs dans le même film, c'était 20 ans plus tard dans le western The Way West de 1967, aux côtés de Richard Widmark.
