Synopsis :

During the Cold War, shortly after the Cuba affair, a US Navy destroyer captain tracks down a hypothetical Soviet Navy submarine in the Arctic. The Finn, assisted by one of the best captains in the Kriegsmarine, a NATO collaborator, leads a crew on the verge of collapse. A journalist is flown aboard the destroyer. Eventually, a misunderstanding aboard the destroyer triggers paranoia that ends in a nuclear incident!

 

About the story...

The story reflects several real Cold War incidents between the NATO and Warsaw Pact navies, including one in 1957 when the USS Gudgeon, a submarine, was caught in Soviet waters and chased out to sea by Soviet warships. Although none of these real-life incidents ended as catastrophically as the Bedford incident, the story illustrated many of the fears of the time.

Pendant la guerre froide, peu après l'affaire de Cuba, un capitaine de destroyer de la marine américaine traque un hypothétique sous-marin de la marine soviétique dans l'Arctique. Le Finlandais, secondé par l'un des meilleurs capitaines de la Kriegsmarine, collaborateur de l'OTAN, dirige un équipage au bord de l'effondrement. Un journaliste est transporté à bord du destroyer. Finalement, un malentendu à bord du destroyer déclenche la paranoïa qui se termine par un incident nucléaire !

 

A propos de l'histoire ...

L'histoire reflète plusieurs incidents réels de la guerre froide entre les marines de l'OTAN et du Pacte de Varsovie, notamment celui de 1957, lorsque le sous-marin USS Gudgeon fut pris dans les eaux soviétiques et chassé en mer par des navires de guerre soviétiques. Bien qu'aucun de ces incidents réels ne se soit terminé de manière aussi catastrophique que l'incident de Bedford, l'histoire illustre nombre des craintes de l'époque.
