Synopsis :
One
evening, in a small town crossed by a national road, two strangers
arrive. They are hitmen who have come to kill Pete Lunn, a former boxer
who once took part in a hold-up. The latter does not hide and waits for
his executioners with resignation, knowing that he himself lost himself
through love a long time ago.
In
2008, the film was listed for preservation in the National Film
Registry of the Library of Congress for its "significant historical,
aesthetic" interest.

It
is interesting to know that film noir is a genre or a cinematographic
style that is part of the category of detective film in France (which is
confused with the genre of crime film, a term more used in Anglo-Saxon
countries). It takes its inspiration from hard-boiled detective
literature (noir novel) and authors. Revolving around resolutely
pessimistic and tragic themes, such as fatality, anguish, betrayal or
machination, film noir is subject to formal and narrative codes that
characterize it, such as the use of suspense, flashback, voice-over; the
use of characters who then become stereotypes such as the femme fatale,
the detective, the weak guy (the poor guy or the ordinary man), the
psychopathic killer, or the couple on the run; in generally urban
locations and often filmed in natural settings and in black and white...
Synopsis :
Un
soir, dans une petite ville traversée par une route nationale, arrivent
deux inconnus. Ce sont des tueurs à gages venus abattre Pete Lunn,
ancien boxeur qui participa jadis à un hold-up. Ce dernier ne se cache
pas et attend ses bourreaux avec résignation, sachant qu'il s'est lui
même perdu par amour il y a bien longtemps.
En
2008, le film est inscrit pour conservation au National Film Registry
de la Bibliothèque du Congrès américain pour son intérêt "historique,
esthétique important"
A propos du "Film Noir":
Il
est intéressant se savoir que le film noir est un genre ou un style
cinématographique faisant partie en France de la catégorie du film
policier (qui se confond avec le genre du film criminel, terme davantage
utilisé dans les pays anglo-saxons). Il prend son inspiration de la
littérature policière hard boiled (roman noir) et d'auteurs. Tournant
autour de thématiques résolument pessimistes et tragiques, comme la
fatalité, l'angoisse, la trahison ou la machination, le film noir est
soumis à des codes formels et narratifs qui le caractérisent, comme
l'usage du suspense, du flashback, de la voix off ; l'emploi de
personnages devenus ensuite des stéréotypes comme la femme fatale, le
détective, le weak guy (le pauvre type ou l'homme ordinaire), le tueur
psychopathe, ou encore le couple en cavale ; dans des lieux généralement
urbains et souvent filmés en décors naturels et en noir et blanc...
